"I left my office "Scott & Fenderson" to go get the kids from school, after I
picked them up I noticed that my gas tank was empty so I stopped to fill
up my tank. It was cold and I was wearing a one of my favorite business
dresses - the grey pinstriped Calvin Klein with no sleeves . So as I stood
there shivering and pumping gas, the guy filling his tank next to me says:
"Cold Weather isn't it?" This makes me smile and I say "I guess you could
say it was cold, but I'm from Maine, so I wouldn't say this was cold." "I'm
from Nova Scotia" he says. "I grew up in Calais on the border of Canada"
I add, to which he replies "I used to have a buddy there - a customs broker
- his name was Fenderson." "That would have been my grandfather or
my dad." I say. Then we both say something about small world, but I don't
add "and they are both dead." because that would have just been a buzz
kill for the conversation. The guy drives away, he's got South Carolina plates.
Later I tell Charlie about it and he thinks I should have gotten more details
about how the man knew my Dad; but I say I didn't need them, that it was
nice enough to have a coincidence like that happen, like it was a wink of
some sort or just to know that It's a small world after-all -- During my first
trip to Florida when I was about ten - the trip that indirectly led me to later
make Florida my home - my dad and I got stuck for over an hour on the
"It's a Small World" ride at Disney. Lately, my kids have been letting me know
its about time for another trip to Orlando, I always make sure to ride that ride
when I'm there. Katie 2/25/10"
